1 LF UK. Review study at the first medical faculty of Charles University

3rd Faculty of Medicine in the Czech Republic Charles University

Czech medical universities

LF – the third medical faculty is the youngest. It was founded in 1953 and was called Lékařská fakulta hygiene University Karlovy Vary (LFH UK), which changed to the current one in 1990.
3. lékařská fakulta stands out against the background of the very different curriculum of 3LF UK. If the first and second faculties adhere to the well-known classical form of education, then the third has chosen a path closer to the American education system.

Education at the 3rd Medical Faculty of Charles University is distinguished by its structure. The management of the faculty in the 90s carried out conceptual changes, dividing the training in medicine at Charles University into three cycles, which are divided into modules.

There are no familiar subjects like Anatomy or Histology here in the first year, but there are cellular fundamentals of medicine (Bunečné základy medicíny), which are a combination of genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology and histology. Much attention is paid to the student’s contact with the patient from the very first year of study, in general, great emphasis is placed on microscopic aspects of medicine. The system of obtaining credits is also significantly different, here most subjects are divided into blocks according to topics, at the end of each of which a test is written. The points for each such test are summed up, and the credit for the subject is given in the end for a sufficient number of them.

The admission procedure

is quite similar to the first two faculties.

At 3.LF UK, there is a greater emphasis on mathematics and physics, which is why the entrance exam in physics is more difficult in comparison with others. Along with 2.LF, an oral interview is conducted after passing the profile subjects. Many students choose 3LF UK precisely because of its dissimilarity from the rest, as well as its focus on the American education system.

The emphasis is placed on integrated problem-oriented learning and the study of interdisciplinary disciplines. 3.LF UK students are trained on specific clinical situations, thanks to which students develop logical thinking and learn independent decision-making.

The 3rd Medical Faculty includes hygiene and prevention, labor and tourism medicine, medical law, medical ethics, scientific methodology in its curricula and offers a wide range of elective courses. Students have been working with patients since the first year of study.

The 3.LF UK entrance exam takes place in two rounds

The first round is a test in biology, physics and chemistry. The second round is an oral interview in which the applicant must interpret a popular scientific text. Communication skills, independent thinking abilities and general knowledge are also evaluated. That is, in the second round, the commission evaluates not knowledge, but abilities.

Unlike the first and second medical faculties, the third faculty does not publish collections of standard tasks of entrance tests. 3LF UK does not require a foreign applicant to provide a certificate of the Czech language, but at an oral interview, the commission also assesses the level of proficiency in the Czech language (C1 level is required).

Specific directions and details – https://www.lf3.cuni.cz/. Medical education in the Czech Republic differs in approach and is divided into three cycles, which are then further divided into modules, but in general, everything takes the same 6 academic years. How to apply for a medical degree in the Czech Republic? Entrance at the 3rd faculty in two rounds: the first in the form of a test in biology, physics and chemistry (90 questions), the second in the form of an interview (interpretation of a scientific text).
