History of nanotechnology in the Czech Republic
In the Czech Republic, nanotechnology began to develop actively after the revolution of 1993. In 2004, at the Technical University in Liberec, Professor Yirsak and his team made a real breakthrough in this field — they designed the world’s first machine for creating nanofibers. It was manufactured with the assistance of ELMARCO and was named Nanospider.
“I am confident that we can become a leader in this field, and a leader on a global scale. Now everything depends on our ability to choose programs that will receive a rational solution. We are conducting strategic debates on this topic, discussing national priorities in the field of applied research. When making amendments, we will also talk about nanotechnology. This is one of the options,” says Pavel Belobradek, Deputy Prime Minister for Science, Research and Innovation.
Since then, science has made great strides forward. And the world needs good specialists in the field of nanotechnology. There is work both in research centers and in production.
The Institute of Nanomaterials operates at the Technical University in Liberec. “The development of technology has made it possible to create new materials from tiny particles,” comments Miroslav Chernik, a representative of the Department of Nanotechnology at the Technical University in Liberec.
Nanotechnology specialists work in research institutes and in medical-technical, nuclear-physical, chemical-technological companies.
Interest in nanotechnology is also shown by the Škoda Auto automobile plant, and the Austrian fiber manufacturer Glastoff, which has a branch in the Czech Republic in Lovosice.
Liberec Technical University — Faculty of Mechatronics, Computer Science and Interdisciplinary Engineering
The full program of training specialists in the field of nanotechnology at this university lasts nine years — three years of bachelor’s degree, two years of master’s degree and four years of doctoral studies. Of course, you are not required to study at all levels in a row and can enroll in any of them separately by passing the entrance exams.
At bachelor’s and master’s degrees, the specialty with the right direction is called “Nanomaterials”, in doctoral studies it is called “Nanotechnology”. The faculty claims that this direction is suitable for everyone who is interested in physics, chemistry and nanotechnology. Studies are conducted in Czech, but some courses are taught in English.
The curriculum consists of physics by 29%, chemistry by 20%, 19% are subjects of a narrow specialty, 13% are independent projects, 10% are mathematics and 9% are subjects of the student’s choice.
The graduate will receive basic knowledge in the field of physics, mathematics, chemistry, adequate knowledge and experience in the specialties related to nanotechnology (applied nanotechnology, nanobiotechnology, bioanalytics) and in the areas of diagnostics and characteristics of materials, at the level necessary for undergraduate graduates. The graduate is able to independently conduct laboratory work, experiments and research. He knows the modern methods used in the preparation and diagnosis of nanomaterials, is able to apply them in practice. The graduate is also able to use modern devices (for material preparation, device diagnostics, computer technology).
After receiving a diploma, he can work as a qualified employee of companies that work with nanotechnology in the Czech Republic, for example, a diagnostic specialist, a consultant of the company, a representative of the company in the field of “advanced” nanotechnology.
Bachelor’s degree: Applied Nanotechnology in Czech universities – Aplikované nanotechnologie. The duration of bachelor’s degree is 3 years. The university also has further master’s and postgraduate courses in nanotechnology in the Czech Republic.
For admission, a test in mathematics and physics is usually taken, less often a test for general knowledge and chemistry.
Yana Evangelista Purkin University — Faculty of Natural Sciences
A graduate of the Bachelor’s degree in Applied Nanotechnology will have general knowledge and skills in the following areas:
- related to nanotechnology (applied physics, nanotechnology, nanobiology and bioanalytics);
- diagnostics and characterization of materials.
Students get acquainted with modern methods used in the preparation and diagnosis of nanomaterials and can apply them in practice. A graduate of this specialty can work in companies related to nanotechnology as a consultant or diagnostic specialist.
Master’s degree in Applied Nanotechnology at the University named after Yana Evangelista Purkin already provides deeper knowledge in the field of nanotechnology. Graduates are prepared for scientific activity in various fields related to nanotechnology — from the production of medicines to the manufacture of fabrics.
The doctoral specialty “Applied Nanotechnology” trains specialists in one of four areas:
- Physical methods of preparation of nanomaterials using plasma technologies.
- Chemical methods of preparation of nanomaterials — super-molecular structures used as new drugs, for example, Biosensors.
- Bionanotechnology, that is, the preparation of biosensors and their practical application
- Computer design of nanomaterials.
Palacki University in Olomouc — Faculty of Natural Sciences
Nanotechnology can be studied at the University of Palatsky for bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Bachelor graduates will have knowledge in the field of physical and chemical fundamentals of nanotechnology. They will learn the basics of theoretical and experimental physics, inorganic chemistry, materials science and mathematical methods. They will be able to conduct basic physical and nanotechnology experiments and evaluate them.
Duration of training: 3 years.
After graduation, they can work as researchers or laboratory assistants in research centers of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic or in private research centers dealing with nanotechnology.
The Master’s degree in Nanotechnology prepares future engineers for scientific activity in specialized centers.

Higher School of Chemical Technology – Faculty of Chemical Engineering
This university became the first higher education institution in the Czech Republic, the selected bachelor’s degree programs in which were awarded the “EuroBachelor” quality mark. Of all European countries, the Czech Republic became the ninth in a row where the university was awarded such an honor.
